Boot Camp Success Stories

Jo Roberts

"I look and feel 10 years younger."

At the beginning of the year, I read an article about New You Boot Camp which seemed to promise (and deliver) the results that all women seem to want to achieve: a dress size smaller, eating patterns regulated and a good girlie time. Some of the activities sounded scary but after looking at some photos I felt that if all these women could do it, so could I.

I had begun to feel like a bystander in my own life. I have two teenage children and have been married for 16 years to a proper action man. Over recent years I had started to watch my family take part in activities rather than join in myself because I felt anxiety. The major area in which my fear was showing was my driving, following an accident on the M4 fifteen years ago with my six month old baby in the car with me. This triggered serious panic attacks whilst driving and reduced me to visiting my parents in Wales using the A40 in case I needed to stop to breathe. When you are affected by a real fear it is hard to make people understand. I was told many times how safe the motorway is but it made no difference. A true speed-phobia developed.

I booked to attend a Camp in May, told no one and was not convinced I’d turn up until I’d actually arrived (via the A40 and some other really slow roads). I remember thinking what on earth have I done but quickly adapted to being told what to do. I loved not having to make decisions, embraced being told what to wear, what time to get up and really enjoyed the company of the group of girls I met, some of whom now are very close friends. I loved the extreme exercise regime, thought the three trainers were amazingly inspiring and could feel my old confidence coming back.

On my return I decided that I was going to do my Mountain Leader training with a view to having a career based outside, which is what I love. I also took motorway driving lessons and am able to visit my parents via the M4 having overcome my motorway fear.

I recently did a second week with NYBC which was riotous and have come back with killer arms and the most positive attitude to life I’ve ever had.

Jo has lost a total of 2 stone and 2 dress size and is now a size 8.
